Stop Smoking aids are big business, despite their many side effects!  Many factors are driving the desire to stop smoking.  There’s not only the many serious health risks, there is the ever increasing cost and the fact that many areas, including restaurants, some bars and even some cities, have banned public smoking.

When I hear or read about this subject it takes me back to my journey to stop smoking.  That journey began when the U.S. Surgeon General announced that smoking could be hazardous to your health and the warning was placed on cigarette packages.  My husband and I impulsively decided that we would both quit smoking.  Of course, that didn’t last long.  I was sneaking cigarettes at home and my husband was sneaking cigarettes at work.  It wasn’t long before we each caught on to the other and we just gave up.

Fast forward 20 years or so.  We had taken the Silva Mind Control Basic Lecture Series and I was having some successes with the various techniques. Jose Silva, in his genius, had included the Habit Technique in the seminar.  I decided it was time for me to give up smoking, so I started with the principles I had learned.  I made a list of the many reasons this habit was harming me.  Then I made a list of the many reasons the accomplishment of becoming a non-smoker again would be beneficial to me.  Then I began using the famous Silva technique of choosing a date 30 days in the future and programming that on that date I would stop smoking and never again have the desire to smoke.  (I say famous because twice it was described in Ann Lander’s newspaper column to be a sure way of quitting cigarettes.)

During that 30 day time I didn’t consciously work to quit but I did visualize myself, in the special state of mind I learned in the Silva seminar, “acting as if” I were a non-smoker.  Anyone who has ever smoked knows there are many activities and mini-habits involved with being a smoker and I played out those scenarios in my visualizations of being a non-smoker.

I will admit that in the next few weeks after I actually did quit I had an occasional cigarette.  But, I didn’t really enjoy those few and I didn’t lose sight of my goal and before long you couldn’t have paid me to smoke again!

I have had many students through these years of teaching the seminar tell me that the Habit Control technique has been invaluable for them.  And, of course, the technique can be used for any sort of habit or addiction one has the desire to change.
